On Sunday at 3:13 a.m., a coastal flood advisory was issued by NWS Wilmington NC, valid between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m.
Up to one-half foot of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways in Coastal Horry and Coastal Georgetown counties until 8 a.m. this morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that “affected areas listed are based on average tide conditions. Additional locations may experience flooding during periods of heavy rainfall, high winds, or other factors.”
“Vulnerable causeways to and from local beaches may experience minor coastal flooding. Low-lying roads and locations along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks may observe minor coastal flooding,” says the NWS. Residents and visitors are advised to check with local officials for the latest updates on closures and safety guidelines. “If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary precautions to protect flood-prone property.”
This advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m.

For those in flood-prone, low-lying areas, the NWS strongly advises immediate action:
- Seek higher ground and follow evacuation orders without delay.
- Lock your home, disconnect utilities and appliances if time allows.
- Avoid basements or rooms with submerged electrical outlets or cords.
- If you observe sparks or hear buzzing, crackling, or snapping sounds, evacuate immediately.
- Do not enter floodwaters, as even 6 inches of moving water can be hazardous.
- If trapped by moving water, move to the highest point possible and contact emergency services (dial 911).
Flood Risks During Heavy Rainfall
During periods of heavy rainfall, low-lying and flood-prone areas face an increased risk of flooding. Avoid driving through water on the road, regardless of depth, as just 12 inches of swiftly flowing water can sweep away most vehicles.

- Turn on headlights – Even during daylight, headlights improve visibility for all drivers.

What Is Hydroplaning?
Hydroplaning occurs when a vehicle slides uncontrollably on wet roads. This happens when water builds up under tires faster than the vehicle can displace it, forming a thin layer of water between the tires and road, leading to a loss of traction.
