China Ready to Help Syria Restore Peace and Stability: Envoy
Asia News: According to Xinhua, China has expressed its hope that Syria will achieve peace and restore stability soon, with a commitment to playing a constructive role in this process, a Chinese envoy stated on Tuesday.
“Recently, the situation in Syria has undergone significant changes, to which China pays close attention,” said Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, during a UN Security Council briefing on Syria.
“It is imperative to stabilize the security situation,” Geng emphasized, urging all parties in Syria to exercise calm and restraint, avoid actions that could escalate tensions, and work to prevent new conflicts.
The envoy called on all parties to take steps to protect civilians, ensure the safety of diplomatic missions, and safeguard foreign nationals in the country.
“We hope that Syria’s state institutions will remain functional to facilitate the restoration of social order,” Geng said, adding that countries with significant influence, particularly those in the region, should contribute constructively to stabilizing the situation in Syria.
Geng also voiced “grave concerns” over Israel’s continued airstrikes on Syria and its activities in the demilitarized buffer zone in the Golan Heights, including settlement expansion. He called on Israel to halt these actions.
The ambassador reaffirmed China’s longstanding policy of friendship and cooperation with Syria, emphasizing non-interference in Syria’s internal affairs and respect for the Syrian people’s choices.
Expressing his sincere hope for Syria to achieve peace and stability, Geng stated that China is “ready to play a constructive role to that end.”
